Step 1: Let Your Child Create a Halloween Drawing
Start with the most important part of the project—the original artwork.
Ask your child to draw a Halloween-themed picture on a piece of paper. They can create pumpkins, ghosts, bats, witches, monsters, or any other Halloween elements they like.
The goal is to preserve the character of the original drawing rather than trying to make it perfectly symmetrical or digitally polished.
Step 2: Photograph the Drawing and Import It into Inkscape
Once the drawing is finished, take a clear photograph of it.
Open Inkscape and import the photo into your document. Try to take the picture from directly above the paper so that the drawing does not become distorted.
The imported image will be used as the reference for creating the paths that the iDraw H SE will eventually draw.
Step 3: Create a Path with the Pen Tool
In Inkscape, select the Pen Tool, then choose Create BSpline path.
Start drawing a small portion of the outline of the Halloween artwork.
In Fill and Stroke, set:
- Fill: No paint
- Stroke: Flat color
This creates a visible path that can be used to trace the original drawing.
Step 4: Trace the Drawing with Smooth Curves
Continue tracing the Halloween drawing using smooth curves.
For a more organized workflow, you can create different layers and name them starting with numbers. These layers will later be used to control the order in which the different colors are plotted.
The number of points you choose when tracing will affect the final result. Adding more points generally allows the path to follow the original drawing more closely, while using fewer points can create a simpler interpretation of the artwork.
Take your time when tracing curves and important details to preserve the appearance of the original drawing.
Step 5: Create Multiple Layers and Use Hatch Fill
In this example, the artwork contains four different layers. Layers 1 and 2 need color filling, while the other layers are used for line drawing.
First, select the path on Layer 1.
Go to:
Extensions > iDraw Utilities > Hatch fill
In the Hatch Fill settings, configure the fill according to your project.
The line width should be selected according to the diameter of the pen tip you are using. You can also adjust the fill angle to achieve the desired appearance.
After setting the parameters, click Apply.
Step 6: Apply Hatch Fill to the Second Layer
Repeat the same process for Layer 2.
Select the path on Layer 2, open:
Extensions > iDraw Utilities > Hatch fill
Adjust the settings according to the pen you plan to use and apply the hatch fill.
At this point, the artwork should contain four separate layers, with the first two layers filled with color and the remaining layers used for line-based details.
Step 7: Install the Paper and Pen on the iDraw H SE
Now it is time to prepare the iDraw H SE Pen Plotter.
Install the paper and pen on the machine.
In Inkscape, click Extensions and select the corresponding iDraw plugin. In this example, the HSE Control plugin is used.

Step 8: Plot the Artwork by Layer
Open the control interface and prepare to draw the artwork layer by layer.
Install the pen color needed for Layer 1.
Then select Layers in the control interface.
The layer numbers correspond to the drawing order:
- 1 = Layer 1
- 2 = Layer 2
- 3 = Layer 3
- 4 = Layer 4
Select the appropriate layer number before starting the corresponding plotting process.
Step 9: Change the Pen Color and Complete Each Layer
After Layer 1 has finished drawing, install the pen needed for Layer 2.
Return to Layers and change the selected layer number to Layer 2, then start drawing.
Continue the same process for Layer 3 and finally Layer 4.
Each time you change the pen, make sure to:
- Install the correct pen color.
- Open the Layers option.
- Select the corresponding layer number.
- Start the plotting process.
By combining multiple pen colors and layers, the iDraw H SE can reproduce the original Halloween artwork with detailed lines and colored areas.
The final result can look surprisingly close to the original hand-drawn artwork, making it difficult to distinguish the machine-plotted version from the human-drawn design.
